The Yakima Memory Project: Web Design
CONTENTdm is used for database cataloging and searching capabilities for the website. In addition, CONTENTdm provides a method to design customized collection interfaces.
As an interface to the digital collections and CONTENTdm interfaces, additional pages were required for introduction, project description, user feedback and contribution avenues. To achieve this, several software programs were utilized:
Photoshop 6.0: The Photoshop 6.0 software, purchased to assist in scanning and digitizing the photographs for archival preservation and CONTENTdm, was used to prepare the images for the Yakima Memory home page, as well as the top navigation bar for all pages.
Fireworks 4.0: The completed Photoshop images were inserted into Fireworks in order to add lettering and prepare the sliced images for the home page. Fireworks can break down the image into slices so that it will load in many pieces, rather than one large image. This enables faster loading. Fireworks also optimized each image for faster loading.
Dreamweaver Ultra Dev 4.0: Dreamweaver was used to create and organize all web pages.
CONTENTdm provides a preliminary html document in Content/docs directory. This index.html document has written "You may edit this page to suit your needs." This page had embedded URLs that the HTML client used to search the collections. This page was replaced with the new home page, and the hyperlinks creatd by CONTENdm were transferred. Additional pages such as feedback, project outline, technical information, etc., were created.
Search engines
To prepare the Yakima Memory site for indexing by search engines, several items were put into place. All web pages created in Dreamweaver have at least three META tags; Description, Title, and Keywords. The website also includes a document titled "robots.txt." It conforms to the Robots standards and indicates those folders and files that should be excluded from indexing. During the cataloging of images into CONTENTdm, metadata was created.
